Are these veggie Rolls different from the classic sausage rolls?
They are crisp golden-brown pastry rolls filled with cream, cheese, spring onions, spices and breadcrumbs. Their shape resembles that of sausages, but in reality, they are creamy, crumbly savoury munchies that can be savoured at practically any time of the day.
Why this Recipe?
You'll enjoy making a large batch of these simple veggie rolls. And gobbling them throughout the day, serving them to your guests, offering them to your kids as yummy rewards for when they complete a task, and much more!
That's why we suggest you take out your oven mitts and your most oversized baking tray and get going. Because once you bite into one of the rolls, you'll regret not making extras. Also, this is a perfect party food that is made with simple ingredients.
What Are Vegetarian Sausage Rolls Made Of?
- Puff pastry sheet: Find this in the frozen aisle of any grocery store.
- Spring onions: Also called scallions or green onions.
- Cheddar cheese: Well grated.
- Panko breadcrumbs: You can find these at an Asian grocery store or order them online.
- Heavy cream: Choose your personal favourite brand, you can replace it with soy sauce or whole milk.
- Paprika: Find this in the spices aisle of a grocery store.
- Black pepper: Just what you have at home will work.
- Egg: Needed Just to brush the pastry at the very end.
"See the recipe card below for more information about the ingredients and quantities."
Step By Step Instructions
One: Before prepping our veggie rolls, preheat the oven to 220°C or 425°F. This will also be a good time to crack open an egg and beat it in a small bowl. Also, line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Two: Take out a large mixing bowl to prepare the filling. In this bowl, combine all the filling ingredients together (heavy cream, cheese, spring onions, breadcrumbs, paprika, and black pepper). At this point, you can dip your clean fingers in, taste it, and make alterations to the spices as per your liking. Once you've prepared the filling that will go inside the roll, set it aside.
Three: Roll out the pastry sheet flat onto the countertop or any flat surface. Cut the pastry lengthways into two rectangles.
Four: Taking the mixture, we prepared before the filling into your hands, using a spoon or spatula, spread it between the two rectangles. Spread the mixture into the centre of each rectangle lengthwise. It should look like a long sausage in the centre of each one).
Five: Now, focusing on one triangle at a time, brush the edge of the pastry that you left bare before with the beaten egg.
Six: Carefully roll the pastry up, and wrap it in the mixture, making sure that it's pretty tight.
Seven: Repeat the same with the other rectangle piece of pastry.
Eight: Once both the rolls are tightly wrapped, you'd want to seal the edges.
The best way to do this is to pick up a fork and gently press down on the overlapping flap of the pastry. When you firmly press these fork impressions onto the flap of pastry that you just closed, it'll prevent it from opening up once placed in the oven.
Nine: Brush egg wash over both rolls, then use a sharp knife to cut each one into 10-11 equal pieces. You can make these pieces as long or as short as you would like. Poke the top of each one with a fork.
Ten: Place these rolls onto the baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
Voila! You just finished making the easiest baked savoury goods. That was quick, wasn't it?
How to Make Vegetarian Sausage Rolls in the air-fryer
Air-fryer is a great alternative to the oven in making Sausage Rolls. You'll need to place these bite-sized veggie rolls into the air-fryer basket and set the temperature to 200°C or 392°F for approximately 15 minutes.
Make sure that there is enough space between the rolls to expand a little. You may need to air-fry the rolls in several batches to do this comfortably. Also, it's good to keep in mind that the temperature can vary depending on your particular air-fryer brand and model.
For an easier time cooking with an air-fryer, note down the time it took for the rolls to turn golden brown the first time and use that timing for the remaining batches.
Air fryers also come in really handy when you need to reheat these rolls.
Top Tips
- When you are rolling the pastry around the filling, try to get it as close and tight to the filling as possible. This will ensure you don't have spacey bites when you bite into the roll, as the filling never stuck to the pastry in the first place.
- Make sure to roll out the pastry on a well-floured surface or parchment paper. If your rolls get stuck to the counter and ruined when pulled, all your efforts will go in vain.
- Dust your work surface with some flour to prevent the puff pastry from sticking to the surface.
- Add a pinch of sea salt if you like; however, be careful of the salt, as cheddar cheese is always salty.
Recipe Variations
These Easy Vegetarian Sausage Rolls can be customized to fit your taste or occasion by simply swapping out a few ingredients. Here are a few such suggestions:
- You can use any intensely flavoured hard cheese. It does not have to be cheddar.
- If you like soft cheese, you may add some cream cheese or cottage cheese along with the cheese.
- If you're a fan of spices, go all out and add some ground cumin or coriander.
- Don't shy away from fresh thyme, parsley or coriander if you prefer fresh herbs.
- You can toss in any crunchy vegetables that you think would pair great with the cheddar, such as diced yellow and red peppers.
- Sprinkle some sesame seeds or black sesame seeds on top of your rolls before baking them.
- Add a pinch of dried herbs such as thyme, rosemary, sage or basil.
- Add in some tomatoes or fresh garlic.
- Use mushrooms to give your rolls a meaty texture; they are one of the best meat substitutes.
Serving Suggestions
There are so many ways to dress these snacks up or down! Serve these as appetizers with some yummy potato salad on the side. Some fresh green or red chutney garnished with some fresh herbs would make you seem just as gourmet!
And if you're looking for a more leisurely dip, then mustard, tomato sauce, chili sauce or some good-old ketchup would do just the trick!
You can also serve it as a side dish to Lemon Garlic Baked Tilapia, Mexican burgers or Thai Basil Fried Rice.
Storage
To Store: Keep in an air tight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
To Freeze: You can make a big batch of these rolls and keep them in an airtight container or ziploc bag in the freezer; they will last for 2-3 months.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you can. You'll just need to switch out some ingredients for vegan ones. Switch out the puff pastry for some vegan puff pastry. The cheddar cheese can also be replaced with some shredded vegan cheese. And when it comes to sealing the pastry, since you won't be able to use a beaten egg, go for some vegan milk (plant-based) instead.
If you choose to freeze them before they are baked, then go ahead and freeze them right after you've finished rolling them. This will ensure that they will be crisp when defrosted and plopped in the oven, with their cheese just as fresh. Anyone will barely be able to tell that these rolls were frozen in the first place.
