I ADORE these super easy, old-fashioned buttermilk cookies! They are incredibly soft and delicious! I also added chocolate chips for extra flavor and sweetness.

    Buttermilk Cookies

Why use buttermilk in cookies? Well, baking with buttermilk is a game-changer. It makes soft, moist and fluffy cookies and adds a delicious, slightly tangy flavor, which I really LOVE.

In this recipe, I used store-bought buttermilk, but making homemade buttermilk is super easy! Simply add ½ tablespoon of vinegar to ½ cup of milk and let it sit for a few minutes. Ta-da!

Let's make a batch of these classic homemade cookies together. You'll love how easy and delicious they are!

    You'll Need

    buttermilk cookies ingredients.

This is an overview of all the ingredients I used to make the Perfect buttermilk cookie dough, which doesn't require chilling. The quantities are in the recipe card.

    • Butter: I used unsalted batter at room temperature.
    • Granulated sugar
    • Egg: I used one egg at room temperature
    • Buttermilk: I like to use fresh, full-fat buttermilk.
    • Vanilla extract
    • All-purpose flour: I highly recommend sifting the flour for better results.
    • Salt
    • Baking soda
    • Chocolate chips: I prefer milk chocolate chips.

    How To Make Them

One: Preheat oven to 350 F / 180 C and line 2 large cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Butter and sugar in a mixing bowl.

Two: Cream the butter and sugar in the stand mixer or with the electric mixer until light and fluffy.

Add the egg, buttermilk, and vanilla extract to the mixture.

Three: Add the egg, buttermilk, and vanilla extract and mix until combined.

Sift the flour over the mixture.

Four: Sift the flour over the mixture, add the salt and baking soda, and mix until combined (The cookie dough should be sticky).

    Fold in the chocolate chips.

Five: Fold in the chocolate chips.

Scoop the cookie batter using a cookie scoop into the baking sheets, leaving space between them.

Six: Scoop the cookie batter using a cookie scoop into the baking sheets, leaving space between them.

Seven: Bake for 10-12 minutes, then let them cool completely before serving.

Tip: The cookies come out of the oven so soft, so don't touch them for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
